The defensible calculation
For a fixed, verified share count, the change in attributable equity is shares × (latest price − reference price). Option values, transactions, share splits, liabilities and parent-company overlap require separate treatment.
+ Σ shares(i) × [price(i,t) − price(i,reference)]
+ documented nonmarket revisions
The reference estimate and share-price baseline must refer to compatible dates. Our Forbes snapshot currently has date-only precision, so it cannot safely be combined with an arbitrary intraday reference quote.
What the June filings establish
Musk’s 17 June Form 4 reports 413,152,109 common shares through his trust and 710,172,677 directly held restricted shares after settlement. The direct balance includes 423,743,904 shares from the 2025 performance award; adding that award again would double-count it.
The filing reports exercise of 303,960,630 options and withholding of 17,531,857 shares for the exercise cost. The resulting 286,428,773 restricted shares carry a service condition through 19 January 2028. The exercised option balance is zero.
Tesla’s June-quarter report confirms forfeiture of the separate 96-million-share interim award. It should not be included alongside the reinstated 2018 award.
These are dated ownership observations, not a current freely tradable share balance. Later transactions, restrictions and valuation treatment remain to be reconciled.

What remains missing
The API key is configured, but public display rights, current quote access and the complete ownership ledger remain unverified. Unknown quantities are not silently set to an invented number. Consequently the displayed Forbes estimate remains fixed at its source date.
Source discovery
Tesla investor relations and SEC EDGAR are starting points for identifying primary ownership evidence; they do not by themselves verify a share balance.
